Final Program and Concept

There are many details involved in the process of wine making that take it to its final product. The effort and specificity is revealed through the flavor and aroma of the wine. We experience these on our tongue and in our nose. This relationship between taste and smell, nose and tongue creates an interdependence- without the two working together, the flavor of the wine cannot be fully experienced.

The project reflects this interdependence in that it is based on the model of an agricultural cooperative. This cooperative will provide the equipment, machinery, space, support, and marketing platform needed to produce and market wine. Production will be split into 4 different levels, though membership is based on how many tons of grapes.

The building is organized by connecting and integrating three different space types: commercial, production, and business. These spaces are arranged in order that each entity can effectively operate separate as well as together.

Cooperative Membership Levels

Level 1= Less than 1 ton of grapes

Level 2= 1-5 tons of grapes=227L-1135L

Level 3= 6-20 tons of grapes=1362L-4540L

Level 4= 21-40 tons of grapes=4767L-9080L

Production Breakdown

870lbs of grapes=394.4kg=1 barrel=60 gallons=98.7L

1 ton of grapes=2.3 60(227L) gallon barrels= approx 700 bottles (750ml each)

2 ton of grapes=4.6 60 gallon barrels=approx 1400 bottles

3 tons of grapes=9.2 60 gallon barrels=approx 2100 bottles

4 tons=9.2 barrels=2800 bottles

5 tons=11.5 barrels=3500 bottles

6 tons=13.5 barrels=4200 bottles

10 tons=23 barrels=7000 bottles

15 tons= 34.5 barrels=10500 bottles

20 tons=46 barrels=14000 bottles

21 tons=48.3barrels=14700 bottles

40 tons=92 barrels=28000 bottles

Design Brain Storm

These sketches are quick drawings of what the project could potentially be.  This excercise helps the creative process move forward.  Whether or not the project is visually reflected in these sketches it still helps on the journey to the final project.

Site Lines

The following images show the different lines that appear near the site.  The reason for this is to help inspire the beginning of the design process as to what the form of the project could be. the box in the middle represents the site.

Project Brief

Site location for this project in Depoe Bay, Oregon between Highway 101 and Shell Avenue.  Currently, there is only one winery within the city limits of Depoe Bay.  Given that Depoe Bay is a highly desired tourist town another winery could do very well for itself.

Another interesting wine business venture within the international wine community is to have a common winery for individual vintners (a person who makes and sells wine) to use for the process of making and bottling wine as well as storage.  They provide the grapes.

I am proposing the design of a winery cooperative that not only provides the services of a common winery, but also provides a tasting room and a place to market the wine.  To compliment the tasting room there will also be a small cafe that serves a variety of tapas.
